Local members of Wyoming’s Native American tribes were honored by the Torrington City Council this week as Mayor Leroy Schafer and the council declared November to be Native American Heritage Month.

To address the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes affecting American Indian youth, researchers from UNLV were part of a national collaboration with three federal agencies and eight tribal colleges to develop “Health is Life in Balance” - an innovative K-12 diabetes curriculum for tribal schools and schools with large American Indian/Alaska Native populations.

Many Native Americans struggle with the truth hidden in the American tradition of Thanksgiving - a reality that is nothing to be thankful for. While most students with Native American heritage still celebrate Thanksgiving, it is a misconception that Native Americans and Europeans came together for a happy feast, said Annette DeBrotherton, president of the American Indian Club.
