Mrs. Parker is a member of the Coast Miwok tribe. She moved to the Yosemite area when she married her husband, a Paiute, and has studied with the great basketmakers of that tribe. Mrs. Parker holds an honorary doctorate and has worked for the National Park Service for 45 years, demonstrating the craft. She told me that she studies the work of other tribes as well and has been inspired to add new ideas and patterns to her work. It impressed me that a woman who had been sent to an Indian School as a girl, meant to become a housekeeper, is now a celebrated artist whose work sells for thousands of dollars.
