A L Kennedy, 42, was born in Dundee. She is the author of novels, short stories and non-fiction, and her novel Day was Costa Book of the Year in 2007. An associate professor of creative writing at Warwick University, she has also performed stand-up comedy on the Edinburgh Fringe.
